The Healthy Living Balance

We all learn the concept of balance very early in life, the second we start to move in fact and without being able to balance we would all look a bit like the inflatable floppy guy outside a car sales yard!
So of course balance is quite important if we want to get through life a bit easier. The same applies to our health, if we want life to be a little easier then taking care of our health should be one of our top priorities. Now, this doesn't mean we need to follow strict diets or have no "treat" foods EVER, the healthy living balance is a tonne more simple than that.
A lot of people follow the 80/20 rule, eat healthy 80% of the time and eat other foods 20% of the time. For most people who are just trying to lose a little weight or keep healthy this works amazing, is stress free and allows you to enjoy all the foods you love while still living a healthy lifestyle.
If your #1 goal is weightloss however, you may need to follow a more 90/10 approach. Either way it can be a simple process once you learn how.
I know we all get those little voices in our heads leading us to the delicious deep fryer smell a bit like our friend Mickey Mouse here, following the scent to his favorite meal.

With the amount of recipes out there these days, all we need to do is google a healthy version. That may not be as simple as the drive through, but our bodies will sure appreciate the effort.
Knowing our portion sizes is also one of the important factors when it comes to balancing out healthy living. Restaurants and cafes have 2 goals. 1 is to satisfy the customer making sure they return and 2 is making a profit which means more often than not the portion sizes will be more than what your body needs. So not only will eating at home save you some money, you will also be able to correctly portion out your meals to help with the balance.
Another thing to help keep things balanced is to watch how much sugar and sodium we consume. There are 2 main things I try to make sure I check and do when doing grocery shopping:
1) Make sure the food is minimally processed, as fresh as possible. If I do buy canned versions of something I will check the ingredients to find the one that has the shortest list
2) Check the sugar and sodium content of foods that are packaged. We should be aiming for around 5g of sugar per 100g and between 120-400mg of sodium per 100gms of food
To start getting your healthy living a little more balanced try make a mental checklist:
* Is this food processed
* Can it be made healthier at home
* Is it low is sugar and sodium
If these changes seem like too much of a leap from what you are currently doing, take a step backwards and just focus on one of the points, making sure to add in more fresh fruits and vegetables each day will also naturally help you cut down on sugar and sodium.
