Why you should aim to fail ... Sometimes

I used to really beat myself up every time something didn't work out or I 'failed'

There was one thing that I gave myself a super hard time for and even now I have to keep reminding myself of everything I learnt from that experience.

I was owner/operator of a small dairy and gas station in a small town for about 4 years, and well, to keep it simple it just didn't work out in the end. 4 years of working almost 7 days a week with very little time off or proper time for family. I loved the experience, but there are 10,000 things I would do differently if I were to do it again!

I watched a video recently from 'The Art Of Improvement' and there was a quote in it from Thomas Edison "I have not failed 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work" and for my experience above this is 100% true! Each time I feel disappointed, I remind myself of what I have learnt and that it was not a complete waste of time.

Take a second and think about something you have done this year that you feel you have failed at. Now turn it around, I haven't failed at _____ I learnt how not to do _____ and next time I will ____.

Here is an example for me earlier this year .... I haven't failed at losing weight, I have now learnt that my body doesn't like too much carb's (even though my tastebuds love them) so next time I will be more aware of my portion sizes.

This also kind of goes back to Stuart Little, if you haven't seen the movie with the little mouse, seriously go watch it! They always talk about a silver lining and ever since that movie, I have always tried to find the silver lining in bad situations.

Trying to live a healthier lifestyle and eat better food is hard, so instead of trying to be perfect take a look at what you have done in the past, what worked? What didn't work so well, or what do you feel you 'failed' with? Take that one thing and try to improve it by 1 small step each week.

If, like me, you want to get your carbs under control, the first step I would take is looking at how much and what exactly it was that I ate previously. Now how can I fix that by 1 small step? ... Yesterday I ate 2 sandwiches made up of 4 slices of toast bread, that made me feel horrible and bloated, so today I will have 1 sandwich made up of 2 slices of sandwich bread and see how that makes me feel.

Continue to work with this process, reminding yourself there are no failures, only lessons and before you know it the sun will be shining strongly through on those cloudy days
